Brauen, Martin, The Mandala: Sacred Circle in Tibetan Buddhism
Brauen, Martin
The Mandala: Sacred Circle in Tibetan Buddhism
Boston, MA, Shambala Publications, 1997. Hardcover. Green paper boards with gold gilt lettering on spine and cover, green and color illustrated dust jacket with yellow lettering; 151 pp. bw and color illustrations throughout. "The mandala is the foremost symbol and allegory in Tantric Buddhism for man's relationship to the cosmos. For the Tantric pratitioner, mandalas serve as supports for meditation, for visualizatrion, and, ultimately, for the attainment of Buddhahood. They take a variety of forms, from simple geometric diagrams to more elaborate paintings on cloth, complicated patterns of colored sand, and large three-dimensional carved structures. After introducing the basic theory and practice of mandalas, Martin Brauen describes the main Tantric Buddhist worldview with the aid of computer-generated models. To provide a deeper understanding of the mandala's function, the rich and sacred symbolism of the famous Kalachakra mandala, in its various stages, is then philosophic, religious, and psychological aspects of the mandala is discussed in the final chapter. Several different approaches to the mystery of mandalas are presented, not with the intention of transmitting incontrovertable truths, but as a means for readers to develop their own understanding of the Tantric worldview." - dust jacket description. G+/G (book sees minimal shelf wear at corners and spine, previous owner's nameplate on front page, all pages clear and intact - dust jacket sees light bending and wear at corners) .

Chandra, Pramod, The Sculpture of India, 3000 Bc - 1300 Ad
Chandra, Pramod
The Sculpture of India, 3000 Bc - 1300 Ad
Washington, DC, National Gallery of Art, 1985. Softcover. Gray pictorial wraps with white lettering and green spine; 224 pp. bw illustrations throughout. "A deliberate attempt has been made in this exhibition to give the viewr an impression of Indian sculpture as a whole, in all the rich diversity of idioms that flourished in the ancient regions of the country. Within a broad stylistic framework, which at any given time stretched across vast regions, a wealth of distinctive local characteristics contributed to its surpassing excellence. Side by side with works of grand conception and majestic power are those cast in more intimate modes, both lyrical and delicate. Together with images of absorbing spirituality are those of innocent sensuousness; in mood they range from the colessal to the miniature. The finest pieces often display a whole range of these qualitites, and the unity of the sculptor's vision is not disrupted by the great variances in scale. The forms range from the early rendering of smooth volumes expanding outward from an inner core to the complexity of sharp planes filled with tension. The completely naturalistic or the totally abstract could conceivably be found in these works, but the best of Indian sculpture combines both of these qualities." - quote from Introduction p. 19. "The present work is conditioned by a kind of unconventional approach to the study of Vedic elements of iconic forms and concepts especially those mentioned in Rgveda. She feels that all gods of Hinduism are basically rhe gods of the Rgveda which changed their forms from time to time to meet the demand of the people. In her view these developments are well attested to by the literature of historical times, e/g/ the Smrtis and the Puranas." - dust jacket description.
